Work with us

Want to join our Team?

At Bury St Edmunds Veterinary Centre we truly believe in creating a positive and enjoyable work environment. Do we get it 100% right all the time? No. But anyone who tells you they do would be spinning a web of lies. We love our team. We respect them. We encourage them. We try hard to do our best by them. Occasionally the apple falls a little far from the tree. But we learn from that and don’t make the same mistake twice.

Truly independent, diverse, forward thinking. All the buzzy buzz words everyone likes to band about, only with us, it’s all true. We opened in May 2019 with a team of 9. Since then, we have grown in number, experience and skill set. We could not be prouder of the team we have.

If you are wondering what its like to work with us, then find out a bit more about us by having a nosey at our team profiles on this website then head to our socials to check out day to day life here at BSEVC. We are always happy to hear from people who would like to work with us, in any of our 3 beautiful teams: Vets, Nursing and Client care. Even if we don’t currently have a job advertised its always worth dropping us a line. It might just be that we were looking for our next team member but hadn’t got the advert out yet. Pop us an email telling us a bit about you and what sort of role you are searching for, attach your cv for completeness and we will be in touch.

Work experience, placements and EMS

Work experience

The advantage of not being dinosaurs means that we remember what its like to try and get work experience. Often it can seem to be more about who you know rather than who you are. With many veterinary practices being a blanket no to work experience students we choose to keep our doors open for you. Everyone wants you to have the experience to get the place on the course or get the job, we make sure its possible for that experience to occur.

Having said that, we do get very booked up, so please book with as much notice as possible. We only take one school/college work experience student at a time to ensure you get a good experience. Send us an email. That means you. Not your mum, your nan or your neighbor who friend’s aunt knows Carly from the yard. It’s important it comes from you as we want to hear why you want to do work experience with us. Send your email to hello@buryvets.co.uk, address it to Emma Honey. She’s our RVN who’s in charge of booking all you guys in and making it a fair process. She will invite you to come over, have a look around and discuss what it is you want to do, think of it as a mini-informal interview. Make sure you bring with you a list of proposed dates that you are interested in. If we have space at some of the dates you request, then we will get you booked in. We normally start with a single week or 4 individual weekdays to begin with. If you show passion and intuition and want to come back we will see if we can get you back again. But no guarantees, as like I have mentioned, we get booked up quite far in advance. We do also offer year 10/11 work experience placements, but please contact us with as much notice as possible to have a chance of getting the dates you need.

When you come for your placement then get stuck in, show initiative and ask questions. We never like to see a student propping up the walls. Being a new practice, those walls are quite new and don’t need any help staying upright. Health and safety may mean what your physically allowed to do, for the under 16s mostly, is a little restricted. Most our team don’t tolerate silence well, so feel free to fill silences with any question, there’s no such thing as a stupid one.

Student Veterinary Nurse Placements

We can accept student nurse block placements from those on the degree qualification. Again, we would only have one at once and as we have our own SVN we try to make sure you’re not at the same stage as her so that you’re not both trying to be involved with the same cases at the same time. We can also take SVNs who are studying and working at DWR and need a first opinion placement to help complete their training. We currently have 2 clinical coaches, Matt and Jess.

If your interested in having a placement with us, then email Simon on nursemanager@buryvets.co.uk with a bit about who you are, where you study, what you are looking to get out of the placement and the dates you are interested in and he will take it from there.

When you come for your placement get stuck in, let us know what you’re looking to learn. We like to see enthusiasm and love for the job, we also like to hear how you’ve been taught things. Learning is always a two-way street.

EMS

We are always happy to take vet students on EMS placements. We don’t have accommodation, but we can try and help find you something locally if needed. We are walking distance from the train station (about 30mins) but you might prefer to bike if your arriving by train. If you’re driving, we have parking, we just ask you park up the top past bury bowl to not fill up all our client parking.

We only take 1 vet student at a time to make sure you get the most out of the placement. The summer months book up fast, but we would always advise you booking with as much notice as you can. We have many returning vet students, so that clearly tells you we are a good place to see practice. We love our profession and want you to share our love. With so many negative nelly’s it can sometimes be hard not to get lost in your transition though vet school and into your first jobs. We want to give you the feedback that will enable you to progress and an experience that builds up your confidence, so that when you hit day 1 as a newly qualified vet you don’t just hope you will do ok, you know you will. If you want to book a placement then email Jenny Reason (MRCVS) on hello@buryvets.co.uk with a short bit about you, which uni you are at and what year you are in, alongside a list of potential dates that you are looking for. We usually advise a minimum of a 2-week placement to get the most from your time with us.

When you come on placement with us come armed with a list (at least in your head) of things you want to get out of the placement. We will try our best to help you accomplish this. Come ready to learn, not just from our vets but from the rest of our team as well. Our nurses are incredibly skilled and are never to be underestimated, our receptionists are the bees’ knees of client care. You can learn from them all if you’re open to it.

In my view these are the best vets for miles, having my dogs under there care means everything to me, they are caring & compassionate, I wouldn’t use any other vets, thank you for all the help you have given my dogs & the rescue dogs.
